The first settlers came to the banks of the Kickapoo River in the 1850s, and called the area Pine Grove. The name of the village was changed to Soldiers Grove in 1867 to honor those who camped here during the 1832 Black Hawk War. But the Kickapoo River proved to be the major player in the village history; devastating floods repeatedly damaged or destroyed the village. In the early 1980s, Soldiers Grove chose to move its business district out of the floodplain, building the nations first solar village in the process. Over 20 new buildings were constructed, each using solar energy for at least 50% of heating needs.

Soldiers Grove is home to two exceptional events. Dairy Days, held on Fathers Day weekend, features a horse show, tractor and truck pulls, games and tournaments, and a children's carnival. The Driftless Area Art Festival, held on the third weekend of September, features the visual, performing, and culinary arts of the Driftless region.
